Pet Weight & Vessel Sizing
Category: Composting Science Research Date: April 11, 2026 Status: Verified
Weight distribution analysis for companion animals, mapped to Jora JK400 chamber capacity and carbon-to-nitrogen ratio requirements by animal size tier.
This document provides the scientific and logistical validation for pet processing weight cutoffs, vessel selection, and the "Standardized Return" model. It replaces all previous DIY barrel research with the Joraform Commercial Standard.
1. Pet Weight Distribution & Cutoffs
Based on AVMA and AAHA breed weight data, our service levels are designed to capture the maximum addressable market while staying within the thermodynamic efficiency limits of a single processing vessel.
| Tier | Weight Cutoff | Market Coverage | Vessel Assignment |
|---|---|---|---|
| Tiny | <10 lbs | 35% | JK270 (Dual Chamber) |
| Small/Medium | 10–30 lbs | 40% | JK400 (Dual Chamber) |
| Large | 30–40 lbs | 13% | JK400 (Full Capacity) |
Operational Cutoff: 40 lbs. Pets over 40 lbs require excessively large vessels (Jora JK5100 or custom) and significantly longer cycle times. By capping at 40 lbs, we keep the "1 operator" mission profile intact.
2. The Joraform Advantage (Thermal Efficiency)
The JK400 and JK270 series utilize a dual-chamber, insulated galvanized steel body.
- Insulation: 2.25" HDPE provides a superior thermal barrier compared to DIY barrel-wrap systems.
- Pathogen Kill: Standardizes the required 131°F-149°F kill zone for 3-5 consecutive days.
- Yield Consistency: The dual-chamber nature allows for simultaneous "Composting" and "Curing," ensuring the end-product is stabilized before it reaches the customer.
3. The 1.5 Cubic Foot "Standardized Return"
Legacy Soil & Stone has moved away from variable return volumes. For every pet processed (Tiny through Large), the customer receives a standardized return.
- The Unit: 1.5 Cubic Feet of finished memorial soil.
- The Math: 1.5 cubic feet is equivalent to a large bag of premium garden soil (approx. 11 dry gallons).
- Weight: Approximately 45–55 lbs depending on moisture content.
- Shipping: This volume fits into a standardized heavy-duty shipping box (18"x18"x12") and ships via FedEx Ground economically.
3.1 Handling the "Excess" Life (The Unconditional Forest)
Because a 40 lb dog + bulking agent can yield up to 2.5 cubic feet of soil, a surplus is generated.
- Surplus Logic: We return the "Perfect Portion" (1.5 cu ft) to the family for their home tree/planter.
- The Forest: The surplus is lovingly contributed to the "Unconditional Forest" Mother Pile at the LSS facility in North Georgia. This ensures no pet remains are ever discarded, while keeping customer shipping costs fixed and manageable.
4. Standardized Cedar Memorial Planter
To match the 1.5 cubic foot return, the LSS Memorial Planter is now standardized to a single, high-end design:
- External Dimensions: 18"L x 18"W x 14"H
- Volume: ~1.6 Cubic Feet.
- Material: 1" Thick rough-sawn Western Red Cedar (North Georgia local mill).
- Logic: Standardizing to one planter size enables bulk manufacturing in the Studio, reducing labor time and material waste while ensuring every customer gets a "Tree-Ready" memorial vessel.
